Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has ordered an investigation into a company's application for plant variety protection covering four holy basil varieties, amid concerns the move could affect farmers' rights and traditional cultivation practices. Vegetable vendor Somphon Deedphimai in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Phimai district worries she will not be able to sell holy basil any more if more varieties are patented.
