Kasetsart University has defended legal protection for four new varieties of holy basil, or kaprao, saying registration does not automatically restrict farmers from growing other varieties. Holy basil or kaprao in Thai is an herbaceous plant belonging to the mint family that has been widely used in Thailand for centuries. It has a distinctive, aromatic fragrance and is an essential ingredient in many Thai dishes.
