US-based startup Marathon Fusion claims it has turned mercury into gold at 10 times the rate achieved by CERN, the world's largest particle physics laboratory. Its method involves using neutrons from fusion reactions to transform mercury into an unstable isotope that decays into gold. CERN's Large Hadron Collider produced about 29 picograms of gold during its 2015-2018 run.
