An RTI reply by the Cabinet Secretariat revealed that after Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan received letters from Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, he deemed it "inappropriate" to take action. The two ECs had sought action against officer Maneesh Garg. Somanathan found that action would be "construed as interference in functioning of the Constitutional body".
