Restoration work is under way at heritage sites in central Afghanistan’s Bamiyan province, where ancient cave dwellings and the ruins of Shahr-e Gholghola face increasingly severe storm damage. Officials say more than half a million tourists, mostly Afghans, visited Bamiyan in the past six months, a 50 percent increase from a year earlier. However, overseas visitors remain relatively few, with decades of conflict and Afghanistan’s international isolation deterring many foreign travellers.
