India must eliminate situations that lead to sewer cleaning deaths. Private contractors and municipal bodies are known to violate the restrictions on manual cleaning specified in the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013. Tamil Nadu recorded 38 septic tank/sewer cleaning deaths, the third highest in India in the last five years, said Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale in Parliament.
