Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s US Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. The son of Egyptian immigrants, El-Sayed built a grassroots campaign around universal healthcare, campaign finance reform and criticism of Israel, overcoming substantial outside spending to win a key battleground state.
