President Catherine Connolly has led tributes to Irish Olympian and European champion runner Ciara Mageean. She revealed in July 2025 that she had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer. President Connolly said: "Ciara was a wonderful athlete, a runner who distinguished herself from her junior years right up to the outstanding achievement of becoming a European champion two years ago.
