The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommends government licences for apps streaming free, ad-supported TV channels, aligning them with cable and DTH operators. Many smart TVs now come with preinstalled apps, such as Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels, that stream live-style channels for free, with ad breaks in. TRAI has recommended no authorisation fee, bank guarantee or security deposit, keeping the proposed framework relatively light for service providers.
